Microsoft has patented a new method of enabling automatic device pairing using connections like Bluetooth and Wireless USB. After the initial pairing of a pair of devices, Microsoft’s new method would allow those devices to automatically pair with other similar devices.
The Microsoft patent uses a method that’s different to the pairing mechanisms currently built into current Bluetooth and Wireless USB protocols. Devices would need to add support for Microsoft’s automatic pairing system. It would use encryption to securely share pairing information among different devices.
An automatic device pairing system like the one detailed in the Microsoft patent would allow your phone to automatically pair with all the PCs you own, a headset to automatically work with your phone and PC or a mouse that can easily move from laptop to desktop.
Microsoft Zune already features wireless synching and there are suggestions that Microsoft could add that and wireless pairing to the newly announced Windows Phone 7 Series. Meanwhile Apple seems to be working on an NFC-infused iPhone. Is the world about to get even more wireless?
