Sony Alpha compact DSLR camera due this year!

A new Sony Alpha concept camera has gone on show at PMA this week, promising DSLR quality imaging and switchable lenses in the body the size of a compact shooter, in time for 2010. Can it dislodge the Micro Four Thirds fuelled Olympus PEN line from the top spot in our hearts?

The PMA photography show is going down in Anaheim, California right now, and top of the billing is this new Sony Alpha concept, which packs a teeny body, interchangeable lenses and what Sony claims is “DSLR picture quality” thanks to an Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor, capable of recording HD video. Yes, it’s very similar to what Olympus and Panasonic are doing with Micro Four Thirds, but Sony likes to do things its own proprietary way, and when the results look this good, who can blame it?

Olympus E-PL1 Micro Four Thirds shooter unleashed

The Sony Alpha compact is only a concept for now, so we don’t know what the final specs or asking price will be, but Sony says it will be launched this year, so if you like the look of that new PEN E-PL1, you might want to wait on it a few months to see if Sony follows up on its word.

In the meantime, check out the pictures of the Sony Alpha hybrid DSLR compact right here, and stay tuned for more of the best new shooters from the show right here.
