ST-Ericsson U8500: PlayStation graphics, PlayStation controller!

The ST-Ericsson U8500 platform isn’t just a mere system for smartphones. No no. It’s one you can plug a PlayStation 3 controller in to and power through 3D games. See how it works in our video!

We were strolling along the halls of Mobile World Congress here in Barcelona today when we saw this curious rig: a ST-Ericsson U8500 platform, aimed for high end smartphones, with a PS3 controller slotted in and playing a game with frankly astonishing graphics for a mobile.

The version of the ST-Ericsson U8500 we saw was running a custom version of Linux, but it will support Android and Symbian as well, and is capable of chucking out 1080p video through a dual core Cortex A9 chip. GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and FM radio are also included, but it’s the ST-Ericsson U8500′s ability to render top quality graphics that has us salivating.

Marvell: £60 Android phones incoming!

Of course, it’s up to phone manufacturers to actually shove the ST-Ericsson U8500 in their handsets, so we wouldn’t expect hacked Sony gamepads to come as standard, but take a look at the video below to see just what it’s capable of.
