Nokia’s only just whipped the covers off its new MeeGo operating system, created in partnership with Intel, and while we’re still yet to see a single screenshot, Nokia has already confirmed the OS will be multi-touch capable, and the first devices running it will launch this year.

We’ve been wading through Nokia’s MeeGo marketing material, and found interesting talk of its plans for 2010. Most tellingly, there’s a word missing from its software strategy: “Nokia plans to launch a MeeGo-based in 2010.” A MeeGo-based what, you ask? Nokia says MeeGo is intended for more than just phones, with the ability to run on laptops, GPS systems and even TVs. Take your pick, but we think they’ll still begin with a MeeGo phone.

However, Nokia goes on to say it is creating “an iconic user experience with integrated Ovi services.” MeeGo will be a multitasking operating system, which comes as no surprise given that it’s built on top of Maemo, but it’ll also have “multi-touch interaction, such as pinching.” Watch out iPhone, MeeGo’s coming for you.

Stay tuned, we’ll bring you more on the first MeeGo gadgets as soon as they’re confirmed.
