Huawei U8800 next-gen Android phone spotted..in a dirty box

The Huawei U8800 is the company’s latest Google blower, with the latest version of Android, 2.1, and for the first time, HSPA+ technology for even faster web surfing and wireless downloads. Naturally, Huawei was trumpeting its latest flagship phone here at Mobile World Congress the only way it knows how: by shoving it in a dirty box smeared with fingerprints. What is Huawei thinking?

On paper, the Huawei U8800 (right, first pic) sounds nothing short of sensational: HSPA+ means download speeds of up to 14Mb/s, and the 3.8-inch screen is one of the biggest on an Android smartphone yet. But the way it was on show at Huawei’s stand, you’d think the company was almost embarrassed to have come up with something so swish, and it wouldn’t let us hold the Huawei U8800 no matter how much we pestered and pleaded.

We suspect the Huawei U8800′s crusty confines are a ruse to get publications to use Huawei’s glossy promo photography only, but we’re not falling for that trick  – a phone is designed to be use in every day life, so that’s where we’ll get our photos from where possible, thanks.

The Huawei U8800 will be out somewhere between July and September, but take a good look at it in the flesh right here, right now. Just wash your hands when you’ve finished, thanks.

Your coverage of the Mobile World Congress has been excellent. But, I have an iPhone and all these other phones just don’t compare. I welcome a little competition but I think all these phones fall short of an iPhone which I never want to replace, especially with a lesser model. I know there’s a world beyond the iPhone but I’m not seeing anything to make me change my mind and turn my back on my iPhone!
