It’s all very well breaking out your iPod nano 5G when you want to do a spot of on-the-go movie making. But what if you’re doing something more strenuous than sitting in the pub with your pals? Step forward the Drift Innovation X170. This bad boy works not only as a head cam, but also hooks up to almost any outdoor kit to ensure your home movies aren’t just of you sitting around getting progressively more battered. Read our Drift Innovation X170 to see how it fares.
The Drift Innovation X170 isn’t HD, which is a real shame if you were planning to broadcast yourself hurtling down the slopes in glorious hi-def. This rather glaring omission aside though, it really is a smart piece of kit.
Unlike most head cams, it rocks a screen so you can frame your shots and see what’s going on. Obviously this isn’t ideal when it’s on your bonce, but use the bundled bike fixing or velcro grips and you can make sure you’re not filming stuff off kilter.

Perhaps the Drift Innovation X170’s coolest feature though is its panoramic shooting, capturing shots at 170 degrees. It means avid watchers on YouTube can see the view that you get while you’re doing extreme sports bumph and get an inkling of your fear as you go flying off the side of a mountain.
But best of all is the Drift Innovation X170’s radio controller. It means you can set the camera up, leave it be and them press the stop/start buttons to get things going. It means you can make like pro-wildlife cameramen as well and film in nooks and crannies that your average Flip Mino or Sony HD camcorder couldn’t dream of getting to.
The only niggle other than the lack of HD is the propensity to pick up wind noise easily. But that’s no biggie if you’re using this out and about and want to dub music over the top. As outdoor cams go, the Drift Innovation X170 is one of the very best.
