Motorola will split into two independent companies by 2011 with its mobile phone and set-top box divisions becoming one company while it’s corporate services will become another.

Sanjay Jha, one of Motorola’s two co-chief executives will head-up the new mobile and set-top box company which will retain the Motorola name.

The other chief executive Greg Brown will head the new enterprise company which will license the Motorola name from the mobile business.

Motorola had considered ditching the handset division during a long period of struggling after the massive success of the Motorola Razr. But recent releases like the Motorola Milestone and the Motorola Backflip have reversed the company’s fortunes.

Iha has admitted that Motorola’s mobile business was a cash consumer rather than generator in recent years but it seems Motorola’s Google Android based strategy has started to work. Putting Megan Fox in its ads might just be a factor too.
