An official Twitter for BlackBerry app, straight out of RIM’s own labs, is coming out this year, bringing a polished UI and the tight integration you’d expect from the folks who actually made BlackBerry OS in the first place. Read on for the first details.
Twitter clients on BlackBerry have been somewhat unimpressive until now: we’ve found programs like TwitterBerry and Seesmic caused more problems than they solved on more than one handset. But RIM’s bringing its own official Twitter for BlackBerry app out shortly, kicking off with a closed beta you can get your name down for now, and a public beta hitting later this year.

RIM’s posted an extensive preview of Twitter for BlackBerry on its site, and it looks promising: you get tweets pushed straight to your phone like email, and it integrates with your inbox so you’ll see @replies in it just as you would instant messages.
The Twitter for BlackBerry app also uses bit.ly for auto-shortening URLs, and as well as being able to manage your profile and who you follow, you can check out tweets going down within a set distance from you using GPS. RIM’s take on displaying trending topics by font size is also a nice touch, and one that should make casually checking Twitter on your BlackBerry as easy as rolling through your messages.
We’ve been given an invite into the closed beta, so as soon as we get Twitter for BlackBerry fired up, we’ll bounce back with our first impressions.
