Glitch is a brand new online multiplayer game with a twist: it’s free, and it runs in your browser. The game echoes LittleBigPlanet‘s adorable design, and with the creators of Flickr behind it, stand to go alongway – even eventually to your Nintendo Wii, or iPhone…

Two years ago the man who set up photo sharing site Flickr and sold it to Yahoo!, Stewart Butterfield, left to start another mystery enterprise, Tiny Speck. Its first project has finally been revealed, and it’s an intriguing idea: Glitch, a Flash-based massively multiplayer online game.

Glitch works in a browser, and sees you guiding a customisable avatar reminiscent of Sackboy (Tiny Speck says the characters you see will be greatly improved by release) through a 2D animated world, in a bid to travel back through time to save the future. You and your cutesy comrades work together to solve puzzles in what sounds like a brilliant cross between the Crystal Maze and The Lost Vikings.

Lego Universe: play it early!

TechCrunch got an early preview of Glitch and came away impressed by how smoothly it ran, even on a shared Wi-Fi connection, as well as word from Butterfield that he’d love to port Glitch to the Xbox 360 or Wii eventually, so we could potentially see Glitch as WiiWare or on Xbox LIVE if it takes off.

Unsurprisingly given the war between Apple and Adobe right now over Flash on the iPhone and iPad, he didn’t see a full iPhone version anytime soon, but did foresee Glitch mini games on the iPhone and Android that would give you extra in-game power ups.

You can check out a demo video of Glitch at the official site below, and sign up for the closed Alpha testing beginning soon too.
