iPhone 4.0 will be larger than the iPhone 3GS according to new pictures of what are claimed to be prototype parts. The images also suggest the iPhone 4.0 will conceal some other tricks behind its shiny face…

iPhone repair website, iResQ, has posted photos of what it claims are parts for Apple’s iPhone 4.0. It claims the new face plate is roughly a quarter of an inch longer than the iPhone 3GS’s front panel.

The alleged iPhone 4.0 face plate also has a new reflective surface directly above the speaker. It’s claimed that this is the likely location of the proximity sensor.

While the provenance of the alleged iPhone 4.0 prototype parts is uncertain, we’re pretty sure we’ll see the new iPhone this summer with iPhone 4.0 codename clues in the latest iPhone SDK

iPhone 4.0 is one of the five products we’d like to see from Apple this year. Find out what the others are in our feature What Next For Apple? 5 products it must launch in 2010.

My hope is that the actual display is larger, but I think this is unlikely because all of the apps would then have to be rewritten if the aspect ratio were different.

I’m in two minds about this. On the one hand, it won’t be an absurd iPad matching resolution, but then with iPhone OS 3.2 supporting a new resolution, who’s to say what iPhone OS 4.0 will allow? It’s something Apple does need to improve though, definitely, as the screen on the latest iPhone is essentially almost three years old, and starting to look a bit grainy
