Google is set to battle Facebook and Twitter with a new Gmail feature that will allow them to share media and see status updates shared by their friends. The new social features could arrive this week.
The Wall Street Journal claims Google is gearing up to reveal the new social feature fuelled Gmail this week though Google is characteristically tight-lipped about the speculation.
The new Gmail social feature is apparently a module added to the main screen which will display updates from individuals you choose to connect with in the same way as Twitter streams and Facebook’s News Feed work.
Google’s updated version of Gmail will also apparently include content shared through Youtube and the Picasa, Google’s photo sharing site.
Facebook’s recent redesign and rumours that the site might add a webmail service could speed up Google’s plans to enhance Gmail with social features.
