The British Library’s rare collection of 19th century fiction will be winging its way to ebook readers like the Amazon Kindle this spring. The library has worked with Microsoft to make 65,000 19th century titles available for free.

Google Books already offers some out-of-copyright works for free download but the British Library project will make previously unavailable titles accessible as well as well-known works from Dickens, Austen and Hardy.

As well as being available for free online, the British Library will make printed copies of the books available through Amazon.

Like the ebook versions of the British Library’s titles, the print-on-demand versions will look like the 19th century editions including the original typeface and original illustrations. They’ll set you back between £15 and £20.
