Facebook has had a facelift this morning, getting a new look homepage to celebrate the social network’s sixth birthday. That’s not the only major shake up Mark Zuckerberg and co have planned though: a new report suggests Facebook is prepping its own full webmail service to take on the likes of Gmail and Microsoft’s Hotmail.
According to TechCrunch sources, Facebook is planning a full webmail service that’ll make use of your Facebook vanity URL, so you’ll be able to send messages from yourname@facebook.com.
Facebook already offers a messaging service, but it’s currently tied to your email you use to login with. A full Facebook webmail would offer full POP/IMAP support so messages would drop straight into any email client you like, and is even being talked about internally as a “Gmail killer”, sources say.
Facebook beats office bans with reply via email
Facebook only recently managed to skirt office IT bans on the site by offering an option to reply to messages in emails, but a full Facebook webmail service could let you do a lot more, without even having to log on in a browser. We’ll shout up as and when Facebook makes anything official.
