Sonic 4 Episode 1 whipped us into a frenzy when it was announced this morning for PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii. But could it be headed to the iPhone as well? Some clues tucked away in a dark corner of Sega’s website suggest so.

Head on over to the official Sonic 4 website, and you’ll see at the bottom that the supported platforms (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade and Nintendo WiiWare) are joined by a mystery black box with a padlock and a question mark symbol, hinting that Sonic 4 is bound for another platform still.

Sonic 4 Episode 1 official: all the details!

The obvious candidates that spring to mind are the Nintendo DS and iPhone, but Sonic Stadium claims to have dug up a graphic on the site (via a now broken link) with a badge revealing that the 2D sidescroller is headed to the iPhone in July.

We’ve not been able to find the image on the site ourselves, but Sonic 4 on the iPhone should come as no surprise since Sega already sells the very first Sonic The Hedgehog on the App Store. We’ll let you know as and when Sega spills any more beans.

[Thanks for the spot James!]
