iPhone 4.0 is likely to be headed our way this summer and tech-savvy detectives rooting around in the iPhone OS 3.2 SDK have seemingly uncovered Apple’s codename for the new device and for the next generation iPod Touch.

Buried deep in Apple’s iPhone OS 3.2 SDK, in its platform simulator there’s a set of folders dedicated to specific iPhone OS devices – the iPhone 3GS, the second generation iPod Touch, something called the K48 (allegedly the internal codename for the iPad) and the N89.

The last one is the device we’re interested in. What is the N89? Speculation suggests it’s Apple’s internal designation for iPhone 4.0. Previous versions of the iPhone were called the M68, N82 and N88. The iPhone 4.0 codename doesn’t give us much to go on but does give a further pointer to its existence.

Apple’s latest iPhone OS firmware update, iPhone OS 3.1.3, also refers to another new model, the N80, which is reportedly the designation for the new iPod Touch. Rumours of iPhone 4.0 features have headed our way before but what specs do you dream of seeing in the next generation iPhone? Let us know.

I’m dreaming of a front facing camera… and full iChat support, so you can call iPhone to iPhone free of charge… or Mac to iPhone with or without video, again free of charge. iChat had a redesign and a ground-up efficiency hike in Snow Leopard, but Apple still hasn’t done anything with it on the iPhone… wonder why.

It is a felony in the USA and international law for you to publish such material about the iPhone 3.2 SDK.

WiFi tethering would be nice although highly unlikely.

Hot chat, right here!
