Whether you’re trying to lose weight, tone up, or simply keep tabs on the whole family’s eating habits, the Withings Wi-Fi scale will let you chart your fitness over time. It goes beyond weight, with measurements for BMI and body fat too. It’ll even recognise family members automatically. But does it work, and is it worth it? Read our full Withings Wi-Fi scale review and find out!
There are dozens of reasons for choosing the Withings Wi-Fi scale. It’ll automatically record your vital statistics each time you step on it, syncing them through your home network to the Withings website, as well as Google Health and other fitness trackers.
There’s even the option to automatically tweet your weigh-ins using Twitter, leveraging the peer pressure of your followers to help you shift the extra timber, and stay clear of the biscuit tin.
The Withings Wi-Fi scale itself is beautifully designed. It isn’t a geeky bathroom accessory, and this smart scale actually looks classier than most dumb weighing machines.
SmartControl universal remote control review
Built into Withings Wi-Fi scale’s tempered glass top are electrodes to sense your fat and lean mass, while underneath there are slots for four AAA batteries and a discreet USB socket, used to set up the Wi-Fi scale when it’s first released from its Apple-esque packaging.
The setup proceedure itself is amazingly slick. A simple download of the latest software, a quick USB hook-up and you’re away. The scale searches for Wi-Fi hotspots before letting you register it through a Mac or PC. It took just two minutes for our Withings Wi-Fi scale to be up and running.
Once the Withings scale is at home in your bathroom (or on carpet elsewhere, with the included rubber feet attached) it’s a cinch to use. Step onto the glass surface, give the scale a couple of seconds to stabilise your weight and it’ll display a progress bar as the data is uploaded. The whole process takes less than five seconds.
Once the upload’s complete, the Withings Wi-Fi scale uses the information to recognise individual users in the same house, and give you a quick update on your BMI and fat percentages through the digital display.
Once your data’s synced up, you can use the web to keep track of it, set goals and keep track of your progress. There’s also a Withings Wi-Fi scale iPhone app, letting you keep track of your mass over time, even while away from a computer.
It’s a compelling package, although at £120 including delivery it’s far from the cheapest way to track your weight changes. That said, the Withings Wi-Fi scale has the potential to revolutionise your fitness regime.
The addition of peer pressure, accurate stats and the ability to track an entire household’s weight changes automatically are well worth the outlay. And that’s before you consider the Withings Wi-Fi scale’s outstanding design and awesome software. A luxury? Yes, but one that’ll pay its way in results, assuming you have the willpower to step on it each day.
