Sony Vaio W

It’s not often a laptop’s packaging makes us fall in love with it, but the Sony Vaio W has done just that. Sony’s ditched all of the Vaio W’s cardboard packaging. Instead, it’s handed over to customers inside its own carry case. No boxes to stash in the attic, or chuck in landfill, and a free laptop bag to boot.

The Vaio W is Sony’s entry-level netbook, packing in an Intel Atom processor at 1.66Ghz and 1GB of memory, alongside a roomy 250GB hard disk and Windows 7 Starter edition. It’s the outside of this titchy portable that makes it really cool though. It’s clad in recycled plastic, while the screen is mercury free and lit by energy efficient LEDs.

It’s the packaging that’s the big story though. As well as replacing wasteful cardboard boxes, the brown carry case is made from recycled plastic bottles, yet feels like normal fabric.

Sony says the Vaio W achieves a 10% reduction in CO2 emissions during production thanks to all its green nips and tucks. Even the manual is supplied in electronic form to avoid wasting paper.

Because it’s so eco friendly, the Vaio W will last for 7.5 hours on a single charge too. Take a gander at it in our image gallery above. It’ll be on sale next month from selected retailers.
