Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is on the cards. And just thinking about the zippy little blue blighter has got our minds racing about what old-school games are crying out for a sequel. So here’s our pick of the five games we want to see updated for the current console gen.

Elite
One of the earliest gamechangers, Elite for the BBC Micro is just begging to be updated for today’s high-end consoles. Imagine those 3D wireframes rendered in HD, with a three-dimensional version of the game chucked in too. Space would look amazing and the potential for online extras is almost limitless. You could even add more galaxies as downloadable content.

Daley Thompson’s Decathlon
Ok, the kids aren’t going to remember Daley Thompson’s Decathlon, or the man himself’s Olympic heroics. So how about a Usain Bolt addition: the more Chicken McNuggets you eat, the faster you run. Plus you could hone your celebrations, starting further from the finish line as you realise no one’s ever going to catch you. Ideal for a handheld hub we reckon, either the iPhone or Nintendo DS.

Sonic The Hedgehog 4 incoming?

Road Rash
Forget the Game Boy port: Road Rash needs a PS3 or Xbox 360 makeover for the masses. Think Forza style garages where you can tart up your bike, an online store for new looks and the chance to beat the living hell out of your rivals online all while going at dangerously high speeds along the Freeway. We’re breaking out our Mega Drive just at the thought.

Golden Axe
The classic Mega Drive platformer is gagging for a full-on next-gen sequel. Imagine how good the graphics would look, not to mention the chance to team up online with your pals to battle baddies as a buxom wench or hella-angry dwarf? It’d have to be 2D though to make sure it maintained a resolutely retro sensibility. But how about a few new characters to keep things nice and fresh?

Skitchin’
Ok, very similar to Road Rash, but the chance to grab onto ever faster motors while you hang on using your roller blades to keep up-to-speed in glorious HD is too good an opportunity to pass up. Plus the PS3, Xbox and Wii could all line up online stores where you could buy new killer kit to make sure you don’t take a tumble and end up as road kill.

Oh the idea of elite being redone with mass effect like interaction and HD graphics. Its enough to keep you awake at night.
