Apple’s patent filings always provide rich pickings for rumour mongers. Recently we’ve had Apple’s Magic Mouse getting a gaming upgrade, whispers of a smart home energy system and the possibility of HDTV recording iPods. But the latest patent is pretty straight forward – the iPod Touch with a video camera built-in…

When the latest generation of Apple’s iPod Touch broke cover, there was a lot of murmuring about the lack of a camera. Steve Jobs dismissed the objections but there was clearly space in the device to add one in. But it seems that could have simply been another example of his taste for tactical misdirection.

Apple’s latest published patent shows a drawing of an iPod Touch with a video camera built-in to it. While the patent was filed in summer 2009, it was only published yesterday by the US patent office. Given that the iPhone 3GS already includes a video camera, it’s a safe bet that the next generation iPod Touch will get one too.

Another patent related to LED backlighting also popped up in this batch of filings from Apple. The Apple iPad has already implemented it but, of course, perhaps future versions of the iPhone and iPod Touch will get LED backlights too.
