Nokia’s move to give Ovi Maps free navigation was a smart one, but at launch last week, the Nokia N97 was a glaring omission from the list of supported phones. But Apple’s flagship smartphone’s now got the free satnav skills, so read on to find out hot to get them.

We asked Nokia’s executive vice president Anssi Vanjoki about the lack of Nokia N97 support for the new Ovi Maps with free turn by turn navigation at launch last week, and he assured us support would be coming within a week. You’ll need to have 2.0.x firmware running on your Nokia N97 to install it, so make sure you’re updated by heading over to Nokia.com/softwareupdate, but once you do, just open up the Applications folder, select the Software Update client, then pick Ovi Maps. Give it time to download and install and presto, you’ve got Ovi Maps with free navigation.

Nokia says that not all countries offer a 2.0.x update for the Nokia N97 yet but that’s it’s coming “shortly”, so if you still can’t get a hold of it, just hold tight: as we said in our review, it’s well worth the wait.
