Legend of Zelda’s very earliest concept art has been unveiled in the latest edition of Nintendo’s Iwata Asks website feature, a regular series with Nintendo’s CEO Satoru Iwata. Iwata worked on the original Legend of Zelda and discusses the birth of the gaming franchise.
Impenetrable as it is, the first image in our gallery of Legend of Zelda concept images shows the specifications for the game. In the Iwata Asks feature, Toshihiko Nakago who has worked on almost every Zelda game reveals that the specifications define Zelda’s items (“compasses, bows, arrows, boomerangs, and gold and silver”).
Iwata also reveals that current Zelda games, including the upcoming Zelda Wii game, are still based on the original specifications drawn up in February 1985. The other scraps of graph paper show plans for dungeon levels and original character sketches.
This isn’t the first time that Iwata has revealed Nintendo’s secrets. He recently hinted that the next generation of the Nintendo DS will feature Nintendo Wii-style motion controls. If you’re after a hit of Zelda, try our Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks review.
