Apple has apparently updated its iPhone SDK to let apps make VoIP calls over 3G, according to claims from VoIP app developers…
In a press release slipped out during Apple iPad Day, iCall claimed Apple has revised its SDK to allow VoIP calls over cellular networks. Previously Apple only allowed VoIP over a WiFi connection.
AT&T announced in October that it would open up its 3G network to VoIP calls on the iPhone, so Apple’s seems simply to have caught up. UK providers have not made any statement about VoIP on their networks yet.
If Apple and UK networks free up the iPhone to make VoIP available over 3G in the UK, that’ll mean Skype for iPhone calls won’t be tethered to WiFi hotspots any longer. We’d love to see it.
