Microsoft is sure to announce some Windows Mobile 7 news at Mobile World Congress next month but could it also be time for the often hinted at Zune Phone to emerge? It seems likely, if clues in the latest Zune software update are to be believed.

The most recent Zune update was rolled out on Tuesday. Zune software 4.2.202.0 appeared as part of scheduled maintenance and appears to hold clues about Microsoft’s Project Pink phones.

Code nestled inside the Zune.inf file, which is used to associate hardware with the Zune driver, identifies a device described as a “Phone” with an ID that is locked to Microsoft. There’s also three different product IDs which could suggest three different phone models from Microsoft.

The new Zune code could simply point to rumoured Zune integration in Windows Mobile 7 but those hardware codes put a niggling doubt in our minds. Three hardware references just in time for Mobile World Congress? Come on Microsoft, chuck a Zune Phone our way.
