We’ve all been there. You’ve found yourself lumped with a Windows Mobile phone, but you long for Android. Soon though, you won’t need to ditch your contract to climb aboard Google’s OS: you’ll be able to boot it up on your phone whenever you like, and a major milestone towards that goal has just been passed.

XDA-Developers is the source for all sorts of Android hackery, from Motoblur on the T-Mobile G1 to free UK Google Maps Navigation, but now one member’s released something very special: software that will allow some Windows Mobile phones to reboot into either Windows Mobile or Android, just from the easy menu screen you see here.

The hack, called Gen. Y Dualboot should work with VGA phones like the HTC Touch Diamond and Touch Pro, and while it requires that you install an Android ROM on your phone beforehand, it’s a smart move that lets you choose on a whim which you want to use. Why shouldn’t phones offer this as standard now, when even Macs can on the desktop?

Not only that, but there’s a version which will support dual booting Android on WVGA Windows Mobile phones too, meaning eventually, you’ll be able to put Google’s OS on the HTC HD2, whether HTC is planning to or not. We’ve not been able to test it ourselves yet, but if you’d rather have decent mobile phone software than your warranty, we suggest you hit the link below for instructions – good luck!
