Apple iPad primed for games

Categories: Gaming News   Tags: , ,

The Apple iPad, Apple’s tablet just unveiled in San Francisco, will be a games machine, as rumoured. And to prove a point, Steve Jobs invited some big players in the mobile games world on stage to show their new wares.

The Apple iPad certainly has the hardware to be an impressive game machine, with a large 9.7-inch multitouch screen and 1GHz processor, and Steve Jobs says all apps (and thus games) will run fine out of the box, and scale to the fullscreen.

Third party developers will be able to get in on the game, but select partners have already started: Jobs brought Gameloft’s Mark Hickey on stage to demo its first person shooter, Nova, on the Apple iPad. Graphics look impressive, but there’s no revolutionary control method.

Hickey was soon followed by Travis Boatman from EA, who showed Need For Speed Shift running on the Apple iPad’s 1024×768 display.

We’ll reserve judgment for how good a games machine the Apple iPad is for when we go hands-on, but we’ve got fingers crossed.
