Nokia Point & Find is a great augmented reality experiment from the Finns, letting you pull up internet info via your phone when you pull it out near a billboard. Nokia has just started testing it in the UK, and if you’re in the pilot zone, you’ll want to check it out.

We’ve seen Android and iPhone apps that make use of a phone camera to show data on top of real world locations, but Nokia Point & Find takes things to the next level by making adverts and object more helpful to you.

Stumble across one of the Nokia Point & Find information points dotted across Colchester bus stops, and you’ll be able to get instant, local information delivered straight to your Nokia phone: you can choose from local BBC news, entertainment, food and shopping information, and local points of interest.

Nokia Point & Find works by using your phone’s camera, GPS and web connection, then delivering info straight to your screen, and the potential it has is huge. A movie poster, for instance, could trigger a download of the film’s trailer for you to watch, while a specific bus stop could tell you what route are running and when the next one arrives.

Nokia Point & Find is just a pilot in Colchester at the moment, but because it’s being run in partnership with JC Decaux, one of the country’s biggest outdoor advertisers, if it’s a success, we could see it rolling out nationwide. You can test it out by downloading the Nokia Point & Find software (Just text HERE to 81066) and you can check out supported handsets here.
