EA’s latest blockbuster title, Mass Effect 2, should sell by the truckload when it launches on Friday, but the action RPG isn’t just about top notch graphics and blazing firefights: it’s got a stellar story too. And to prove a point, EA hosted its very first discussion group, to chat about the game’s story yesterday. Isn’t it time we all started taking games this seriously?

The “console club” event took place in London’s Notting Hill last night, and saw fans of Bioware, the developer of Mass Effect 2, come together to try out the game before its Friday release, and more unusually, discuss the intricate plotline, themes and mise-en-scène of the game’s universe, Book Club style.

It’s a novel idea from EA, but a sound one: far from being the red headed step child of media, games have stunning storylines and intelligent settings (though admittedly, you’d need to spend most of a book club meeting about Metal Gear Solid 4 working out what actually happened), so why not?

EA says it would consider more events in the future, so if you fancy some fine wine, nibbles and natter about games, we’ll be sure to hit you with the date and time. The publisher’s also keen for gamers to host their own Console Clubs, with a spokesperson telling us that EA would love “to see this taking off as a regular thing amongst gamers”.

What do you reckon though? Should we give games the intellectual discussion they deserve this way? Or are games still best chewed over desktops and Doritos bags at a LAN party?
