Macbook ProApple was reportedly robbed in 2009 with a $100,000 prototype laptop taken from its headquarters at Infinite Loop in Cupertino. But Apple itself and the police have not confirmed the incident. Is there anything to the rumour?

Zirana, a site with the goal of becoming “a one stop shop for all local information”, carries a report of a theft from Apple at some point between the 18 December 2009 and 1 January 2010. It claims:

Between 1/1/ and 12/18 unknown suspect(s) took a prototype laptop worth about $100,000 from Apple Computers on Infinite Loop using an unknown method. The suspect(s) sold it to another suspect. Deputies recovered the laptop from the second suspect and he was released pending further investigations.

A unique Apple prototype could well be worth $100,000 and Apple’s traditional cloak of silence would explain its lack of confirmation around this story. However, Zirana’s report is extremely vague and doesn’t come from a police report. Who’s claiming that Apple lost of a prototype? No one really knows.

The word “laptop” suggests this wasn’t related to the Apple Tablet we’re waiting for but could be that a next generation Macbook briefly escaped the labs?
