Nokia‘s Ovi Maps just got a whole lot more enticing. Starting right now, anyone toting a Nokia smartphone will be able to use it for free turn by turn navigation, in more than 70 countries worldwide, including the UK. Now, where’s that international Google Maps Navigation, hmm? Read on for the details.
Nokia’s put its purchase of mapping company Navteq to good use, and now allows anyone with a supported GPS Nokia S60 phone to use Ovi Maps for free satnav directions, sticking it to Garmin, TomTom, and even the likes of ALK, which charges for its CoPilot Live software on the same platform.
Currently, Nokia Ovi Maps navigation is supported on the Nokia X6, N97 Mini, E72, E55, E52, 6730 Classic, 6710 Navigator, 5800 XpressMusic and 5320. We’re confirming now whether the original N97 has been left out of the mix.
What’s most impressive about the move to make navigation free on Nokia Ovi Maps is the scale of the launch: no US only tease, like Google, but simultaneous launch in more than 70 countries, and in 46 languages.
Nokia’s press conference is just about to kick off, so stay tuned for more details.
