iTunesApple is negotiating with the major record labels to introduce a free music streaming service tied to iTunes, according to multiple online sources. The rumour follows Apple’s acquisition of streaming site LaLa late last year. The service is likely to allow iTunes users to back-up and stream their music libraries.

Michael Robertson, the head honcho at MP3.com, wrote on AppleInsider the he believes cloud-based iTunes will arrive soon: “An upcoming major revision of iTunes will copy each user’s catalogue to the net making it available from any browser or internet connected [device].”

Apple purchased LaLa for $85m in December. It’s widely speculated that it will use the streaming site’s knowledge and technology to bring iTunes to the cloud.

Apple has already introduced 30-second song samples on its iTunes Preview site but it may introduce a new iTunes.com system that will allow users to buy songs and albums without needing to download the iTunes software.

While some people have speculated that Apple will launch the iTunes.com streaming service at its January 27 event it’s likely that it will arrive later in the year. With Apple apparently set to launch the Apple Tablet (or if you prefer the iPad/iTablet/iSlate) and iPhone OS 4.0, iTunes streaming could be one innovation too far.
