Quoting one of its mysterious sources, Gizmodo claims Windows Mobile 7 will appear at Mobile World Congress next month and hit the shops before Christmas. It claims that Windows Mobile 7 will have legacy support (possibly an emulator or porting tools for developers) for older Windows Mobile apps.

While the Windows Mobile 7 OS is apparently due for Christmas, the SDK for building new apps will around June to give developers some time to get their head around the new operating system. That suggests that Windows Mobile 7 will be significantly different to Windows Mobile 6.

The Windows Mobile 7 input system which has been talked about as Project Natal-like is allegedly more of a complex gesture system. While there is apparently some motion sensing functions, they are used for certain gestures like pinch zooming, rotation and twisting.

It sounds like Windows Mobile 7 will be a big leap for Microsoft’s mobile OS but it’s difficult to tell before we get a look at the handsets themselves. We’ll be at Mobile World Congress, so we’ll be hunting down all the news on the latest announcements from Microsoft.
