Mario up for an Ivor Novello? The Ivor Novello awards, which celebrate songwriting, are set to introduce a new category this year – best original video game score. We’re big fans of the classic Mario soundtracks but what modern titles best typify great game music?

The Ivor Novello committee has decided video game soundtracks are as sophisticated as television and film scores. With lush scores in games like Assassin’s Creed 2 and Final Fantasy, it’s seems like a good move.

Mark Fishlock, a member of the Ivor Novello committee, told The Times: “The Ivors have always sought to reflect the ever-changing world of songwriting and composing. Writing music for games requires a number of specialist skills such as non-linear and multi-layered composition.”

The Ivor Novello committee is seeking entries for the best original video game score category before the awards in May. The score to any game commercially released in 2009 is eligible.
