Sony’s 3.10 firmware update combined with Modern Warfare 2 is allegedly screwing up PS3 Blu-ray drives. Is the software duo waging war on hardware?
A sizeable thread on the official Playstation forums suggests that playing Modern Warfare 2 after installing the PS3 3.10 firmware is causing the console to freeze during gameplay.
Gamers are claiming the problem is more serious though, with 3.10 firmware rocking PS3 owners saying that after their consoles freeze, the problems spread to other games. This side-effect has led some to conclude that the issue has permanently damaged their Blu-ray drives.
Blu-ray drives do have a limited life-span and the reports on the PS3 forum are self-diagnosed. Sony has yet to respond officially to the queries. Have you experienced this problem? Let us know…

Back in November I was playing Modern Warfare 2 when my PS3 completely froze. Thinking nothing of it (it had happened before) I unplugged the console and restarted it. I was horrified to discover that my PS3 drive had failed and had stopped reading discs of any kind.

A bit of internet research suggested that this was a fairly common fault with the PS3. It was at this point that I called Sony, who, despite my PS3 being less than two years old, wanted £99 to repair it. Upon hearing this I was pretty disgusted that such an expensive unit (£400 when new) had only lasted for two years! A subsequent letter to Sony only confirmed that they were unwilling to repair my system for free, despite its age.

I have since bought a new PS3 but I’m still very annoyed with Sony and the fact that a very expensive piece of equipment only lasted two years. Anyone buying a PS3 should consider that it might not only be games that they are paying for in the future but repairs and replacements. I may have been running 3.10 but I can’t be sure, although I think a PS3 that only lasts 2 years speaks for itself.

So what did the retailer say, the people who you actually had a contract with? They are the people you should have been dealing with, and if these refuse to fix it, then its straight down to the small claims court.

From what I understand the retailer would not be obligated to act since the warranty had expired (my PS3 was 2 years old) and therefore there would be no grounds for a claim. As I see it the only grounds for legal action would be if the manufacturer, in this case Sony or perhaps the retailer knew about a fault (say with the lifespan of a blu-ray drive) before an item was sold since this would be in direct violation of the Sale of Goods Act 1979. I don’t work in law so this is simply my interpretation of the law. I don’t suppose anyone reading this is a lawyer!? I’m not really too upset about it since it was an excuse to buy a new PS3 slim with a 250GB hard drive!
