New York Times bosses are set to introduce charging for the New York Times website within weeks. It’s thought the timing could coincide with Apple’s predicted Apple Tablet even on January 27. Could this be another sign that big newspapers and magazines are gearing up to hit Apple’s as-yet hypothetical device?
New York magazine reports that New York Times chairman Arthur Sulzberger Jr is gearing up to announce charging for its website. It claims that the New York Times will opt for a metered payment system where users will be able to sample a certain number of free articles before being asked to pay.
If the New York Times’ does opt for that model, it would seem consistent with iTunes’ current payment system. The New York Times was the source of one of the earliest Apple Tablet rumours in this latest round of fevered speculation when editor Bill Keller seemingly mentioned the device in talk to staff.
It’s been heavily rumoured that the Apple Tablet will feature an ebook reader with a heavy focus on magazines. Apple has apparently been visiting publishers to discuss partnerships and magazine publishers like Conde Nast have shown concepts for bringing their magazines to tablets.
If newspapers and magazines offer subscriptions on an Apple Tablet, will you be buying them?
Due TBA | £TBA | Apple (via New York)

I own a 15″ MacBook Pro and for me it is the benchmark for which I measure all other laptops, PC or otherwise against because they are simply the best computers I have ever owned. The same can be said for the Apple tablet and if the rumours are true then it will almost certainly change the way we think about e-readers and tablet PC’s. Until the Apple tablet arrives I don’t think it’s worth considering anything else until the bar has been set!
