Asus DR-570 OLED e-readerThe Asus DR-570 e-reader has broken cover, after months of internet rumours and hints from the company’s top brass, and it’s shaping up to be a major Kindle killer. Read on for all the details.

Revealed by the Sunday Times this weekend, the Asus DR-570 e-reader packs Wi-Fi and 3G for over the air downloads, and a 6-inch OLED display for vibrant, full-colour magazines and books, as well as Flash video support and a battery with a claimed life of 122 hours.

Asus: Tablet exists, we have it in our labs

It’s not clear if the Asus DR-570 e-reader is the tablet the company’s chairman Johnny Shih hinted at just last week, stating that the company already had a slate computer “in our lab,” but it’s certainly got the credentials to take on Apple’s rumoured tablet device.

We’re still a little suspicious of the Asus tablet’s battery life, however. And Shih himself has questioned the validity of a slate without content to consume on it. And then there’s the question of price. The OLED screen inside the Asus DR-570 will add a hefty financial burden, but it seems one the company is willing to bear.

We’ve confirmed with Asus that the Asus DR-570 is indeed on the way, and are chasing more details now so stay tuned: we’ll update them as we get them.
