Nokia N97The Nokia N97 has only been on sale since June, but the heavyweight flagship phone from the Finns is already being discarded at a clip, according to one phone recycler – more than any other smartphone of 2009, in fact.

Christmas is a time for giving, but it’s also a time for chucking away if you’ve got a shiny new blower to play with. And chuck away people have: SellMyMobile.com has bought more than 22,000 phones off Joe Public between Boxing Day and 7 January, paying out £545,000 in the process.

SellMyMobile: see what your old phone’s really worth!

It comes as no surprise that the Nokia N95 8GB is the most recycled on the list, since it’s of high value and those who bought it at launch are now out of contract. But sitting at number eight on the chart is the Nokia N97, a pricey smartphone only half a year old.

Whether people bought the Nokia N97 on contract or SIM free, people are getting rid of it through SellMyMobile like no other current smartphone: the company has told us it’s also the 13th most recycled phone on the site overall too.

Surprisingly, the year old Nokia 5800 XpressMusic (Which had fans queuing around the block at launch) also makes the list, at number six, while older Nokia candybars, the Samsung U900 Soul, the Sony Ericsson K800i and Nokia N96 round out the top 10.

So, are people disappointed with Nokia’s most recent touchscreen phones, or do they want to cash in quickly with some money back and upgrade to the N97 Mini already? Let us know if you’ve stuck by yours or swapped it for some easy green.

Traded my N97 in via SellMyMobile, as I could not bear it for another moment. I took at hit of approximately £200 to get rid, but I am glad I did. Nokia need to raise their game massively in hardware & software.
