haitiThe earthquake in Haiti has caused untold devastation and has left the island in desperate need of aid and donations. And once again, it’s tech that has come to the fore in helping your money get to the people who need it the most. Here are some techie ways for you to give your cash, now.

See why you need to donate
Google’s Crisis Response page puts into chilling context the extent of the damage caused by the 7.0 Richter scale quake. A Google Earth image shows just what has happened to buildings and livelihoods. You can also donate directly to either UNICEF or CARE, with your money going towards immediate relief.

Donate by phone
Orange has set up its own text donation service. The network has a partnership with UNICEF, and by texting 864233, you will automatically donate £2.50 to the charity. You do need to be an Orange customer however.

Join a Facebook group
There are already myriad Facebook groups about the crisis, but the ‘Everyone That Joins We Will Donate $1 To Help People in Haiti’ is where it’s at if you want to pitch in. It currently has 494,273 members.

Give money to the DEC
The Disasters Emergency Committee brings together 13 charities to help in natural disasters such as the Haiti earthquake. Oxfam, CAFOD, Islamic Relief and Help The Aged are all involved. Go to dec.org.uk and you can give your money direct to its Haiti appeal.

Tweet these ideas
Once you’ve given money, be sure to dive onto Twitter and tell your pals about these hi-tech methods to get money to the victims of the Haiti earthquake. Remember to tag your tweets #haiti

Do you have a link offering any further details about the UNICEF/Orange text donation? At the moment there doesn’t appear to be any details on either organisation’s website.

Also, O2 should have a short code set up later on today to allow its customers to donate £5 to the DEC appeal. Keep an eye on their Twitter feed and http://blog.o2.co.uk/ for more.
