Google is putting Google Earth to work in the service of fundraising for the Haiti earthquake relief response. It’s put up a page showing the damage that’s been done, with the latest satellite imagery and easy links to donate.
We tend to use Google Earth for laughing at inept criminals, but the big G is using it for something much more important: to show just how devastating the Haiti earthquake has been. Head over to Google’s Crisis Response page and you’ll find a window with Google Earth embedded, showing the wreckage from the top down. It’s a haunting view that goes some way to showing the scale of the disaster.
You’ll also find forms to donate immediately to UNICEF and CARE via the Google Earth page, through Google Checkout, as well as a list of hospitals in the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince. For it’s part, Google is donating $1m (£600,000) to the effort. It’s a well thought out response from the company, and well worth a look if you want to help.
