Sony Ericsson Xperia X2The Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 was supposed to be one of Vodafone’s flagship phones, with the network tying up an exclusive deal for the Windows Mobile smartphone, originally planned to be launched last year. But the delays dragged on, and now, Vodafone’s pulled the plug entirely. Sorry folks, but if you’re waiting for a Sony Ericsson X2 there’s bad news: it’s been dropped from Vodafone’s line-up, even before release.

In an official statement, Vodafone confirmed it is no longer planning to sell the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2. “Vodafone UK will not be ranging the Sony Ericsson X2. The delivery date of the device, with Windows 6.5, slipped pre-Christmas due to a series of technical issues and we have taken the decision not to go ahead with the launch as it no longer fits with our planned portfolio,” a spokesperson told us.

Sony Ericsson responded to Vodafone’s move, telling us: “Sony Ericsson can confirm that the X2 will not be released by Vodafone in the UK. The delivery date of the product has slipped due to extended testing and the product, which was exclusive to Vodafone in the UK, no longer fits within their planned portfolio.

“The handset is available in other Sony Ericsson markets however. Sony Ericsson is disappointed not to make this phone available to consumers in the UK but in 2010 the company will be offering a number of innovative, stand-out products in the market. ”

That’s bad news for anyone hoping to get their hands on the QWERTY smartphone with Sony Ericsson’s custom panel software, and following in the wake of Sony Ericsson Satio and Aino problems it’s just the latest in a string of disappointing developments for Sony Ericsson. We’re left hoping the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Android phone doesn’t suffer the same fate.
