Palm PrePalm’s CEO Jon Rubinstein, who was heavily involved in the creation of the iPod during his time at Apple, claims he has “never used” an iPhone. And what’s more he says Palm doesn’t “pay much attention to Apple”. Who’s he trying to kid?

Despite being a former Apple employee and heading the firm that makes one of the iPhone’s biggest competitors, the Palm Pre, Rubinstein told Kara Swisher of All Things D that: “We don’t pay that much attention to Apple…I don’t have an iPhone. I’ve never used one.”

Can it really be true that the leader of a company competing in the smartphone world hasn’t even touched an iPhone? Swisher was incredulous telling Rubinstein that she didn’t believe him.

One subject Rubinstein has been paying attention to is Apple’s decision to kill Palm Pre synching with iTunes. But he delivered only mild criticism of Jobs & co: “We don’t think what Apple did is good for their customers. But Apple’s going to do what Apple’s going to do.”

Perhaps Rubinstein’s time at Apple means he’s just well aware that the synching battle is one Palm just can’t win. Find out about Palm’s latest handset with our Palm Pixi review.
