HP slate: first official photos!

That HP slate Steve Ballmer was showing off just now at the Microsoft CES keynote? Hewlett Packard’s just dished out some lovely official photos for you. Read on for the gallery!

It may not have been the Courier, but the HP slate Steve Ballmer toyed with on stage at the Microsoft CES keynote was certainly something. Kindle books running on it in colour looked stunning. Unfortunately, HP is still keeping schtum on a release date for this prototype HP slate less vague than this year, but with Apple’s rumoured tablet just around the corner, we suggest HP hurries up about it.

That large black frame looks ridiculous! Most manufacturers are aiming for something frameless, this looks less like a tablet PC and more like a digital photo frame!

I was hoping to see Courier so this is a disappointment. HP does have a nice UI that runs on Windows 7 for use with the touch smart PCs. If they allow you to plug it in to a docking station so that you can do real work on it then maybe it is Ok.

advantages of windows 7 vs something like the iPhone OS is you can run multiple apps at once, you can run things like then zune app, the real iTunes and media center. Also you have real good handwriting recognition.

They do need a touch friendly web browser for Windows. The IE moble version shipped with the Zune is ok but still not as good as the WebKit based browsers used in Palm, Android, and iPhone (and soon blackberry). They also need something like OneNote shipped with the product.
