The  Boxee Box  ultra cheap HD media streamer is due to get a first official, in the flesh debut at CES later this week, but to tease us a little bit more, multimedia collective Boxee and manufacturer D-Link just hit us with the specs and pricing, and they’re mighty tempting.

Although there’s no word on what’s powering the Boxee Box ( NVIDIA Ion  perhaps?), D-Link is confident enough to proclaim it’ll handle full HD video streaming with ease over the fast N-grade Wi-Fi.

A whole host of video formats are supported, including H.264 MKV and MOV files, WMV, MP4, AVI, Xvid and Divx, and even high end audio formats such as FLAC, so it’ll play almost anything you can throw at it. The Boxee Box also supports Flash 10.1, meaning it’ll handle HD streaming YouTube vids with ease, and as expected, it’ll offer all Boxee’s social elements like Facebook and Twitter withering about what you’re watching.

The best bit? The Boxee Box will cost under $200 when it ships in the first half of this year – that’s just £125, cheaper even than the low end £150  Acer Aspire Revo  HTPC when it first hit, making it an incredibly tempting solution for sticking under your TV, even if you already have a PS3 or Xbox 360. Stay tuned for a hands-on later this week when CES gets into full swing.

So it’s a media streamer with no internet, slightly cheaper than a netbook (which does have internet) and more expensive than several other similar media streamers. I see nothing new or cheap here.

The ‘new’ is in the interface, codec support, networked abilities… you can install Boxee on your PC or Mac now, and see what the fuss is about. In short, it’ll play anything from anywhere on your network, or through any of its own slots / connections. And Boxee’s interface really is a peach.
