Doom on Palm PreQuake and Doom have finally both been ported to the newly updated webOS. That’s great news for Palm Pre sporting retro-gamers but also means 3D gaming is coming…

webOS 1.3.5 only emerged into the wild last week but hackers have already got to grips with its guts and discovered some treats. The biggest find is a Simple DirectMedia layer library which allows programmers to access the OS’s audio, graphics and input devices.

Savvy Palm Pre hackers have already made use of the SDL library to sling Doom and Quake onto webOS. That’s good news for Palm lovers who’ve envied the iPhone‘s version of Doom but also means newer, slicker games are on the way too.

webOS 1.3.5 also includes native application support which allows you to install and launch a native Linux app without needing hardcore hacking knowledge.

Add webOS’s native Linux app support to the SDL library and hardware graphics acceleration and you’re left with the potential for some proper gaming power.
