Wireless 802.11ac, the next WiFi standard being discussed by the IEEE, will bring bring speeds of over 1 Gigabit per second.
The IEEE has just made the next WiFi standard, 802.11n, official but is already working on the next version. It plans to have 802.11ac available in draft form by 2011.
The new wireless standard will predominantly use the same technology that powers the current 802.11a WiFi protocol. However it will make larger data channels available rising from 20Mhz channels to as high 160Mhz.
It’s early days for 802.11ac WiFi though as the specs may change significantly before they’re finally ratified. Increasing internet speeds in our homes is also a little more complex – if internet architecture (the fiber optic network itself) isn’t upgraded we may not see the benefit from the new WiFi capabilities.

Google’s revealed Living Stories in Google Labs – a real-time news experiment developed in collaboration with The New York Times and the Washington Post. How will this effect how you’ll get the headlines?
Google calls Living Stories “an experiment in presenting news…designed specifically for the online environment.” Living Stories creates single pages aggregating one publishers coverage of a particular news story.
The experimental Google Living Stories homepage currently showcases topics covered by The New York Times and The Washington Post. Current topics include Swine Flu and the continuing war in Afghanistan.
Click through to a specific topic and you’ll be greeted by a Living Stories page displaying a timeline showing key events, a sidebar breaking down topics and a listing of recent articles. The Google Living Stories system also highlights which stories are opinion pieces and which are hard news.
The most interesting thing about Google Living Stories is that it shows big newspapers working with Google to promote their news stories. It’s in marked contrast to Rupert Murdoch’s recent attacks on the search giant.
