Barnes & Noble’s Nook ebook reader has just emerged and somewhat predictably it’s already been hacked. So what’s hiding beneath the surface of the Android-packing book machine?
Delving into the root directory on the Nook, clever hack-happy types at Nookdevs have discovered that the ebook reader is packing untapped multi-media messaging service (MMS) support and support for speech recognition.
While MMS and speech recognition are not yet enable on the 3G packing, colour Nook, they could be activated in the future adding a whole new range of applications for the ebook reader.
If you somehow get your hands on a Nook, the process for getting at it’s secrets is a little involved – you’ll need a screwdriver, a microSD card reader and a computer running Linux – but if you’re keen you can read through the process over at the Nookdevs Wiki.
With all this untapped potential, this just leaves us gagging for a UK version of the Nook. Maybe Cool-er will wow us with its Cool-er 3G model next year or Amazon will finally give us a real UK version of the Kindle.

Apple Tablet manufacturing underway?

According to Oppenheimer analyst, Yair Reiner, who’s been watching Apple’s previous manufacturing partners, “the cogs for the tablet are creaking into action and should begin to hit mass market stride in February.”
Reiner predicts that Apple’s planning to producer up to 1 million tablets per month and that the now almost mythical device will feature a 10.1in display (which could just be a guess but chimes well with all the rumours we’ve heard so far).
This rumour goes a little further with Reiner suggesting the tablet’s 10.1in multi-touch display will use the same LTPS LCD tech as the iPhone. He goes on to talk about Apple approaching book publishers “with a very attractive proposal” to split revenue 30/70 (Apple to publisher) without asking for exclusivity.
If Reiner’s right about the financial split between Apple and the publisher, it would mean that Apple would be aggressively going for Amazon’s Kindle. Amazon’s deal with publishers is reportedly a 50/50 split rising to a 30/70 split when Amazon gets exclusivity.

Twitter’s plan to actually start making money rest heavily on making it better for businesses. It’s just started beta testing its first feature geared squarely at businesses – Contributors.
Contributors will allow Twitter feeds to include multiple authors and will show which specific user tweeted on behalf of the business or other organisation by adding a byline to the tweet.
Twitter explained the new feature on its blog: “Contributors enables users to engage in more authentic conversations with businesses by allowing those organisations to manage multiple contributors. The byline [lets] users know more about the real people behind organisations.”
Twitter has revealed that Contributors is simply the first of several business features set to be launched over the next few months. Some of those features will be visible to all users while others will be hidden tools for business types to tinker with.
Twitter’s moves to make cash from businesses aren’t really surprising – it’s burning through it’s investment cash and has already shown that’s its ready to get serious by hooking up with Google and business centred social network Linked In.
