The Strokes’ leader, Julian Casablancas, has been trying out the solo singer’s life this year and now he’s done his own Christmas single – I Wish It Was Christmas Today. But does it deserve to take up pride of place beside your Pogues best of? We popped it on our iPod Touch to see whether it’ll make us come over all rocking robin or turn this into a blue Christmas.
Julian Casablancas’ I Wish It Was Christmas Today is actually a cover. It was originally recorded by a brace of Saturday Night Live comedians. Casablancas hasn’t really changed much to create his version. The original was a fairly lo-fi, punky, little record and unsurprisingly Casablancas keeps that vibe going. All he’s really added is another layer of guitars like icing on Christmas cake.
It’s a shame that Casablancas didn’t release I Wish It Was Christmas Today in time for the battle for Christmas number one. It’s a noisy and utterly stupid Christmas song that fits well into the tradition established by gonzo cash-in madmen like Slade.
With three days left until Christmas, grab a copy of I Wish It Was Christmas Today and stick it on your iPod with a copy of Phil Spector’s Christmas album and The Ramones’ Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want To Fight Tonight) and blast it whenever someone in your family tries to play Joe McElderry’s dreary cover of The Climb.
