Palm AresPalm‘s webOS operating system for the Pixi and Pre, while easy on the eye and finger friendly, has failed to tempt developers over in the huge numbers the company would have liked. But its new webOS tool, Ares, has just gone public, and it’s the easiest way to make an app, straight from your browser, we’ve ever seen. Read on to find out how you can try it for yourself.

Although Palm released a webOS SDK for third party coders earlier in the year, its new Ares tool, which has just hit public beta, is a fantastic way to try out your own ideas if you’re a web geek but don’t know where to start.

Signing up as a Palm Developer is free and quick, and once you’re in, the Palm Ares webOS development window pops up inside your browser and saves your work in the cloud. It’s a graphical, drag and drop affair, and while still overwhelming at first, comes with a tutorial to guide you in. You can design apps with the Pixi or Pre screen resolution in mind, and test them even if you don’t have a webOS phone with the included emulator.

It’s a smart move from Palm to get more people involved in its webOS platform, and considering Google’s love for HTML5 and a world of web only apps in the future, we’re surprised Google hasn’t produced something similar for Android already.

The Palm Are tool for webOS development tool is available to try out here, and if you have a few hours of down time due to the snow, it’s well worth giving a try to see what you come up with.
