Apple has submitted a patent for a 3D display that automatically adjusts its view relative to the position of the viewer’s head. Is this just mad scientist experimentation by Apple’s R&D team or a potential product?
Apple’s patent details a display that can automatically adjust the point of view and angle of 3D objects or 2D objects arranged in a 3D space. It would use a sensor built into the monitor to know when you moved your head and alter the position of the objet to reflect that motion.
Apple also suggests that the same technique could be used with 2D objects in a 3D space like windows on a desktop. Moving your head would change the position of windows to put the one you were focusing on in the foreground. It’s possible that this could be incorporated into a new version of Mac OS X coupled with new Macbooks and iMacs.
Apple has worked on incorporating 3D elements into Mac OS X in the past and has even experimented with Wiimote-style controls for Apple TV. With 3D becoming a big trend in modern tech, creating a more interactive version of Mac OS X would make a lot of sense.
