Has Spotify been playing up for you over the last 24 hours? It’s not a problem with your router: the music streaming sensation has confirmed the problems are on its end to us, as music fans took it over capacity with massive demand for festive tunes.
OK, hands up, who’s been using Spotify to pipe Wham, Slade and Shakin’ Stevens into the office on loop? The extra demand for festive songs has caused a few glitches for some Spotify users, with a reader telling us connection has been way beyond patchy. We also saw Spotify playing up last night, streaming songs in super slow mo for no reason at all.
In a statement to us, a Spotify spokesperson acknowledged the problems. “Spotify has seen a huge surge in use over the Christmas period as music fans search out their festive favourites. As a result an extremely small percentage of users may have been affected over the past 24 hours.”
“We’ve moved quickly to add extra servers so this should see Spotify back at full capacity. Apologies to anyone who may have been been temporarily affected – we’re always working hard to ensure you experience the best music service possible.”

The Spotify streaming problems do appear to be isolated: we’ve found just a handful of complaints on Twitter, and nothing on forums, but it’s interesting to see that a music on demand service has a Christmas rush too, as people search for seasonal classics and wind down at work. So, whoever’s listening to Sir Cliff, stop it: you’re spoiling it for the rest of us.
