OppoOppo, purveyor of DVD and Blu-ray players, and the odd PMP, is stepping into smartphones, according to a new report. It’s preparing to launch an Android smartphone with a strange twist: it’s got LED lights down the side that indicate live weather info! What happened to just looking up at the sky?

According CNMO.com, Oppo is about to launch an Android phone with a 3.5-inch WVGA capacitive screen and multitouch support, Wi-Fi and a physical QWERTY keyboard.

The jewel in the crown for the Oppo multitouch phone though? A string of LED lights along the side, which bizarrely display temperature, humidity, and even the date, some how. We love the customisable LED on every BlackBerry, but that’s because you can tweak it to flash for different messages and inboxes, not because it tells you it’s raining.

The Oppo multitouch phone is expected to be unveiled sometime in the first quarter of next year. We’ve got fingers crossed on both hands that it doesn’t really look like a cross between a 2008 T-Mobile G1 and a 2007 LG Viewty.
